Spend the morning in the water. After catching some waves, get ready to tackle the invasive Scotch Broom Bush with REDD Fish Restoration. End the day on a high note with Redd FISH RESTORATION SPEAKERS, silent auction and movie night at the Tofino Community Centre!

SURF SCHEDULE:

7 AM - 2 PM, Saturday, April 27th, 2024 - Surf Comp at Cox Bay Beach

PLEASE SHOW UP AN HOUR BEFORE YOUR HEAT! You snooze; you lose. Heats will be posted in advance so make sure to find your heat times prior to the day.

Maltby Rd Parking: Please note that there is BEACH PAY PARKING NOW in effect at all Tofino beaches and in town, including the Maltby Rd Access to Cox Bay for the Surf Event. PLEASE CARPOOL! PARKING IS VERY LIMITED.

SURF HEATS Starting from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm.

We have over 150 surfers to run in a very short time; if you are late, you will lose your spot!

You will need time to change, get your bib, wax the bottom of the boards of your competitors and paddle out! JK. But Seriously, the time of your heat is the time you will need to be in the water, out the back in your jersey ready to rip, so please plan accordingly. Participants will be paddling out 10 minutes before their heat starts. Heats are only 20 minutes long, everyone only surfs once. Everyone is judged individually, regardless of who else is in that heat. Scoring is overall.

Any type of boards are allowed (short, mid or longboard), plan according to conditions. Waves scores will be added up from each wave for a total score for each person. No priority, no drop ins allowed unless you swap board with someone else successfully then you may both get points. Surfs up!

IMPORTANT SURF INFO:

  • There are six surfers per heat.

  • There will be two event flags on the beach and you must remain within this area during your heat. If you are paddling out for your heat starting in 10 minutes, please make sure to stay outside of the judged area and do not catch any waves before or after of your heat or you will get a penalized score.

  • Waves can be loud but try to listen for the marine horn sounds. One horn sound means the current heat is starting. Two horn sounds means the current heat is ending.
There is only one minute between each heats.

  • During that time, the previous surfers heat must paddle in on their belly without catching waves and the waiting heat can paddle into the judged surf area between the event flags and wait for the one horn sound which will mean their heat has now started.

  • If the horn is too difficult to hear, look for the square coloured sign on the beach by the judge tent. A green square indicates Heat ongoing. Yellow means FIVE minutes remaining to the current heat.Red means the one minute between two heats where nobody should be surfing.

  • QUICK TIP: If a surfer is up and riding on a wave before their heat ends (before the two final horns) their wave will count and scored even if it was completed after the horn.

    • Wetsuit repair 8am-1pm at Cox Bay: one item per person and small repairs only.

    • Offgrid Camper Café will be providing complimentary coffee and cookies provided by Patagonia Vancouver at Cox bay (until supplies run out)!
