The WESTCOAST TRIPLE PLANK was founded by Marie-France Roy and Alicia Gilmour in 2017 as a friendly gathering to raise funds and awareness for the conservation and restoration of our precious coast while celebrating the sports and community that we love.

It started back in 2017…

That first year was a ruckus but so much fun! People had to hike two hours just to get to the bottom of a questionably safe banked slalom course but at least it provided amazing views. More than 100 people showed up to shred, surf and skate. We got together with @reddfishrestoration and planted a bunch of native species of different shrubs and ferns at one of their stream restoration sites. Back then, we didn’t know that a bunch of skaters, surfers and snowboard bums along with amazing partners like @patagonia would be able to raise more than $50, 000 over the next five years! Not only it was greatly educational for all of us but the proceeds we raised could go directly towards restoring local habitat and our playgrounds. We are so grateful for all of the participants, volunteers and partners for showing up every year to join the fun and contribute to a cause we can all get behind.

"The original thought when Alicia Gilmour and I started the WestCoast Triple Plank back in 2017 was to celebrate the culture and communities of snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding that we love so much while at the same time raising funds and awareness to protect the places and ecosystems that make it all possible and that gives us life.

If there is one thing that snowboarders, skateboarders and surfers all have in common is that we prioritize and find a lot of happiness in a fringe type of approach that, subconsciously aware of it or not, has made us addicted to the feeling of flow that we get while being on a board and allowed us to create lifelong connections with nature and people who have also made it a big part of their lives.

The WestCoast Triple Plank's goal is not to create podiums that will be remembered but instead, to bring us all together, no matter the skill levels, to engrave memories in our minds of joyful moments spent outside with old or new friends with the common goal to all pitch in a little bit towards keeping this playground we love in a state that can be enjoyed for as many future generations of shredders as possible."

“High fives and pow days” – this is a quote from one of my best friends and founder of The West Coast Triple Plank Marie France Roy, and pretty much sums it up entirely. When we started this event together in 2017, it wasn't about the competition –  it was about celebrating our community and the places we gather to do what we love!

The Triple Plank is such a special event that doesn't prioritize performance but rather gives back to the people and places that allow us to live a life of passion. Each year our community and support of the cause has grown. Our only intention with this event is to bring awareness of protecting what we love and celebrating the bond that snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding have given us all. When it's all said and done, we're so lucky to live a life filled with high fives and pow days. Let's never forget it.”

#westcoasttripleplank raises funds & awareness

The only thing more integral to the fabric of coastal B.C. than the ancient forests is the Pacific salmon. Vancouver Island is home to once legendary runs of chinook, coho, chum, sockeye, pink and steelhead. During the last 50 years, over-fishing, habitat destruction and poor management has resulted in significant declines in wild salmon populations.

The event celebrates everything boarding: The lifestyle, the culture, and the people. Being able to surf, skate, and rip snow in one weekend is rare and what better place to do it than on Vancouver Island? It attracts everyone from locals to international racers and surfers; it's just the best gathering of people who love to get after it and love the culture.

It's not competitive; it's just fun. The triple plank is a contest, yes, but it's just about gathering all the people who love the same things and sending it for the weekend.

Just come hang out and be a part of the community. You get what you give with this contest, and it feels good to be a part of helping the ecosystems thrive on Vancouver Island, a place all of us love to recreate.
